The sprout sandwich is an often overlooked sandwich to make yourself. Do you ever pick one from a shop, restaurant, cafe or deli because it has sprouts on it? We’re going to show you the secret we’ve discovered for the best sprout sandwich so you can start making these at home!
Let’s talk about the Sprout Sandwich. This sandwich does NOT get enough talk time and I’m going to change that. Think about it, whenever you see one, like even right now looking at this picture, you instantly want to eat it. Maybe it’s the best sandwich because you only have it once in a while? Who knows, but what I do when I have made a fresh batch of sprouts is eat one of these every day until my sprouts are gone and I love it every time. This is more like a formula than a recipe per say. Once you have the formula down you’ll be able to vary this with what you have on hand.
Why this sandwich is not only delicious but also good for you
Hopefully you know how good eating living food is for you, but if you don’t already know, living foods are at their peak in terms of enzymes and nutrients. They are full of intact enzymes because the moment food is not living, it starts decaying and the enzymes and nutrients start dying off. Now that doesn’t mean that food that is not living is bad for you, it just means that living food is at its optimal point for consumption in terms of enzymes and nutrients.
Once you start eating sprouts regularly, the weird thing is, you want to eat more and more sprouts. If you have not started growing your own sprouts, you need to learn how to here! You can use any kind of sprouts in a sprout sandwich, like the radish sprouts on this one) and they give a little bit of a kick to this sandwich that we think is delicious, but again any sprouts will work. It’s not only easy to grow your own, it is also much cheaper than the grocery store so you can have them all the time if you want.
The Sprout Sandwich!!
After a bunch of trial and error (which I got to eat all of, by the way 😊), I have developed the BEST recipe for a sprout sandwich. The Everything Bagel Sprout Sandwich. The best part is this recipe will work if you are gluten full, gluten free, vegetarian or vegan and be JUST as delicious. Can’t believe it? Believe it!
The seasoning
You are actually going to want to start with the Everything Bagel Seasoning first. It’s frustrating to make the whole sprout sandwich, be ready to eat it, and then realize you don’t have what you need to take this sandwich over the top.
It should actually be called the Everything Everything Seasoning because it can go on so much more than just a bagel. It is easy to make with what you already have in your pantry and what I do is make a big batch that lasts forever.
Here is the “everything bagel seasoning” recipe I use:
In a dry cast iron skillet toast: 2 tablespoons each of black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, white sesame seeds till the sesame is golden brown and the seeds have popped. You’ll see them jump in the skillet when they do. Remove from heat. Stir in 2 tablespoons of onion flakes and 2 tablespoons sea salt. Put in a 1 cup shaker. Allow the mixture to cool before you put on the lid. Now its ready to use.
The bread
Any bread with seeds or nuts in it will work for your sprout sandwich because you want that little bit of crunch. A little sweet is okay too, just make sure you get that crunch and you want it throughout each slice, not just along the crust.
For a gluten free option, I love Northern Bakehouse. Not only is their bread gluten free, it is also vegan and we think it’s the best one out there. You can even eat this bread without toasting it! Only someone who eats gluten free knows what I mean when I say that. If I find a better one, I will update the link.
Be sure the bread you choose has nuts or seeds in it. Again, you want that little bit of crunch.
Putting it together
Now it’s time to add some mayo to this sprout sandwich. Regular, homemade mayo from scratch, or vegan mayo all work great. You can even spruce it up and use a garlic aioli or hummus instead.
Next you want to add tomato and avocado. Sprouts always pair so well with avocado, there’s something about the smooth rich flavor of the avocado with the light crisp taste and texture of sprouts that just go together so well.
Which sprouts are best?
Now it’s time for the sprouts. As I mentioned, it doesn’t matter what kind of sprouts you use, whatever you have growing or picked up at the grocery store will work perfectly. You will want a handful and you’ll want to spread it out evenly across the sandwich about a half an inch to an inch thick if you can.
Here are 4 suggestions of sprouts to get you started.
- Alfalfa – the classic sandwich sprouts
- Radish sprouts – add a kick you didn’t know you needed
- Mustard sprouts – have a little kick and taste like a combination between mustard and horseradish
- Broccoli sprouts – they don’t really taste like broccoli, but they are kinda earthy and with a little kick
The secret ingredient
Now it’s ready for the final touch, the secret ingredient that takes this sprout sandwich to the next level. The Everything Bagel Seasoning sprinkles. Did you make them?
One or two slices of bread, you decide!
At this point you can decide if you even want another piece of bread to add a lid if you want, or eat it open faced. With the lid on it makes it easier to keep it all together and you get that soft bread feel in your mouth top and bottom. Or eat it open faced, which can be messier but you do it for the way the sprouts tickle your mouth and as you take a bite you feel the tiny bursts of water come out of the sprouts as they crunch. The best!
