Why I bought a Kindle
I bought a Kindle for my eldest son in December 2010 for his Christmas gift.ย I’d never heard of e-book readers at that time, but when I bought his Kindle, I downloaded the free Kindle app for my PC and started taking advantage of the free and inexpensive Kindle books available on the Amazon site.ย My daughter was in her final year of high school and being homeschooled there was a wealth of older books that we were able to use for her high school course work and to add to her enjoyment of both history and literature.ย This saves us hundreds of dollars in book costs.ย I was hooked.
Then in June 2011, I bought a Kindle for myself, being tired of having to sit at the computer to read the books that interested me, mostly history books and nonfiction books about homesteading, gardening, and lifestyle.ย While I really enjoyed my Kindle, now being able to read comfortably on the couch or lying in bed, before I fell asleep, I often had to hunt my Kindle down as Sarah, my daughter also found it more comfortable to read than the free Kindle app on her laptop.ย So in December of 2011, I bought a Kindle Touch for her. I chose the Kindle rather than the Sony e-book reader or the Nook, because of all the free books that Amazon offers every day, just for Kindles.ย You can’t read these on the Sony e-book reader or the Nook.ย You need to have a Kindle or a Kindle app.ย Thankfully the Kindle app is free, so if you have a Nook or a Sony e-book reader, just pop down to the bottom of this page and download the free Kindle app for your pc or device and then keep reading.
Get your own Kindle
If you are ready to purchase the Kindle then check out the Kindle Fire — only good in the USA, right now.ย ย The Kindle Fire is in colour and has a widescreen that lets you watch Amazon live streaming movies, too, many available free if you have an Amazon Prime Account, and are a US resident.ย By far, its the most value-packed Kindle:
Kindle Fire, Full Color 7″ Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi
But if you are Canadian, like me, skip the Kindle Fire and go for a Kindle Touch (Sarah’s version).ย It’s lighter than the other Kindles and easier on your wrists if you do a lot of reading:
Kindle Touch, Wi-Fi, 6″ E Ink Display – includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers
Or a Kindle Keyboard (my version) if you are a bit technically challenged (like me) and get overwhelmed having to remember a lot of buttons and keystrokes.
Kindle Keyboard 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6″ E Ink Display – includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensaver
Now for the good stuff:
Every weekday morning and sometimes on weekends, too, I share free Kindle Books with my Facebook fans.ย These are limited-time offers so I don’t usually share them here.ย By the time you read this article most of these free books will cost money.ย Sometimes the limited time offer is only for a few hours, sometimes it lasts for a month.ย The decision on how long a limited free offer lasts is with the publisher of the Kindle book.
For those of you who are new to Joybilee Farm, here’s how it works:
I search the Amazon pages and a few blogs for free Kindle Books. These are limited-time offers of recently published books on Kindle. Many of them are only free for a few hours. Some are only free in the USA or the UK, so they may not be free in your region, or they might be a worldwide freebie. I can’t tell, but it’s free to me, so I share it.
You don’t need a Kindle to get the freebie. Amazon offers a free Kindle app for your pc or device. At the bottom of this page, on the right, there is a link that will take you to the Amazon page where you can download the free Kindle app for your PC or device.
If you don’t want to download the app, you can read a free Kindle book in the Amazon cloud, as long as you have an Amazon account. Kindle books won’t work on other e-book readers, though, as I already mentioned.
Check the price before you “buy now with one click”.ย By the time you actually read this article, all the books below may no longer be free.ย But this at least gives you an idea of what’s available on my Facebook page.
I don’t read the books before I share them, so they may be bombs. I only post homestead-type books on my Facebook page.
Free Christian Books on Kindle
I post Christian Books — both fiction and nonfiction over at the Gospel Chapel Facebook page. If you ‘like’ that page you can pick those up, too.
Why these books are no longer Free:
That explains what I’m doing and how it works.ย ย By the time you read this, none of these books will still be free.ย They are limited-time offers.ย This is just to give you a sample of how the freebie Kindle books work.ย To get a current list of the free Kindle books for today, check out my Facebook page.
Now for the list of what was free — Friday, March 23, 2012.ย (These books are no longer free, so please don’t click to buy them unless you want to pay full price!)

“Tails” of a Suburban Cowgirl
She loved horses as a child. As an adult, she found ways to have them in her life. This is the true story of that journey from stick horses to stock horses, as the author battles the never-ending march of developers, gobbling up horse-friendly property and replacing it with crackerbox tract homes while she tries to raise and train horses with only books and magazines for guides. She finally finds her way to the horse-friendly town of Norco, where bridle paths line the roads, hitching rails and water troughs are in front of the stores, and where the equine count is higher than the human census. These are the adventures and misadventures you will relate to, if you have followed this path, or be inspired by, if you, too, are a suburban cowgirl (or cowboy) craving a horsey life that you think is unattainable.

Thorns in the Heart: A Christian’s Guide to Dealing with Addiction
A Christian’s Guide to Dealing with Addiction.
Addiction and pain. For most people they are easier to bury or ignore than deal with. Yet, it’s only a matter of time before many of the things we run from must be faced. But how? In Thorns in the Heart, Dr. Steven Stiles cites actual cases to expose the physical, emotional and spiritual vulnerability of Christians when they avoid dealing with pain.
But more than just case examples, this book provides those who suffer a path to recovery. It offers steps to recognizing and dealing with pain through topics such as: Addiction, Compulsion and Pain; Pain, Emotions and the Body; Coping with Depression; Co-Dependency and Pain; Pain from God’s Perspective; and Coping with Compulsive Behaviors. Dr. Stiles explains there are no easy answers, but through understanding pain, addiction, and how God wants His people to respond. Christians can begin a journey of new hope and purpose.
Dr. Steven Stiles, a pastor, currently teaches at William Jessup University and Western Seminary in San Jose. A Bethany University professor emeritus, he has taught addiction studies and lectured internationally for over 30 years. He is the author of Thorns in the Heart: A Christianโs Guide to Dealing with Addiction, Gotchyaa, Recovery for Codependency, and Journey on the Hard Side of Miracles: The True Story of Big Bad Green.
He is the Clinical Director at New Life Community Services in Santa Cruz, California which provides emergency shelter and drug and alcohol treatment. He is a graduate of the American Baptist Seminary of the West (D.Min.) and maintains counselor certification through the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (CADCII).
Still struggling to come to terms with the accidental death of her husband, feeling as if God has betrayed her, Lacy Erikson focuses on her position as the crime reporter for Bismarck’s major newspaper, and shoves thoughts of involving herself romantically again to the back burner. Then she meets Mike Lindahl, a former police officer and gorgeous hunk of man who has his own troubled past. When the unusual murder of a young woman first brings them together, the pair finds themselves increasingly attracted to one another. Can either of them learn to trust again–in each other as well as the Lord?

I just found your blog through Mom Bloggers Homestead Patch group. I love it! Excellent, excellent information! My husband surprised me with a Kindle Fire in November so I could read at night, since it has a backlit screen. Our home is off-the-grid, and lighting at night, in winter especially is scarce. Depends on our sun. The Kindle Fire, made such a difference! Plus, I love those free books and especially the older ones. I will definitely be back to your blog!!!

I use linux so can’t get the pc kindle app(tried wine, no luck). there is a cloud kindle app from amazon that linux users can use but only in the USA, not the UK where I am. I will buy a kindle when cash isn’t so tight.
Joybilee Farm says
That’s too bad. You can get the Kindle app for your cell phone or tablet, too. Did you check that out? There is a whole lot more available to US Amazon customers that isn’t available to others. I find that, too, being Canadian, that lots of offers or benefits from Amazon aren’t available to me.

I have the kindle app for my computer with tons of books, most found by you(thanks). Someone gave us 2 nooks and I want to transfer my books to them but there isn’t an app on Amazon for that. Do you know where I can find an app to transfer kindle books to the nook?
Joybilee Farm says
HI, Penny
Calibre will allow you to convert an e-book that you download to a Kindle app on your PC to the version that your Nook uses. You can then upload the converted file to your Nook using the cable that came with your Nook. I haven’t actually tried this but the program says that will work. Good luck.

I second Styleabaad, I loovoe reading but it must be with an actual book. To truly understand and like a book, I must turn the pages and hear that sound, and smell the paper. It’s just too important for me =) Plus, since I have extreme eye dryness I cannot look at a screen too long or they start burning, itching and watering, it’s a total disaster.
