Tinted lip balm offers transparent natural color that highlights the eyes and draws attention to your natural beauty. Make it with this DIY lip balm recipe.
My daughter’s lips were red and dry.ย They cracked under the stress.ย Two weeks ago, she moved to the desert about 2 hours away from home where the climate is drier.ย She’s working in an air conditioned warehouse that dries the air even more. When I visited her last week, she had the telltale red halo of chapped-soreness around her mouth.ย She needed lip balm.ย Not the commercial stuff made with toxic paraffin wax and petroleum jelly.ย No one wants to lick petrol!ย What she needed was safe, effective, therapeutic lip balm made with soothing natural oils, rich food-safe butters, and real beeswax.ย I gave her my tinted lip balm handmade byย MadeOn Skin Care, in Crimson Rose.ย (My favorite color.ย Believe me it was a sacrifice parting with it. But she needed it more than I did.)
The commercial brand name “natural” lip balm (now owned by Clorox) has 24 ingredients on the label including “natural flavor” and “aroma”.ย It is made with 4 waxes:ย Beeswax, candelilla wax, and two flower waxes.ย It has soybean oil and canola oil — two GMO oils and a mystery oil called “vegetable oil”.ย Sure there are natural ingredients like olive oil, shea butter, sunflower oil, and coconut oil.ย But with 24 ingredients on the label those therapeutic ingredients get lost in the profit margins.
If you have a gluten allergy you must stay away from these “natural” lip balms as they may be cross contaminated with wheat products.ย ย From the Burt’s Bees website:
We cannot provide a list of Burtโs Bees products that are safe for use with your [gluten] allergy because our products may have been manufactured on a shared line with products containing gluten, or raw materials used in our products may have been processed in a facility that also processes products containing gluten.
Therefore, we are unable to state that any Burtโs Bees products are โgluten-free.โ Several of our products are known to contain certain allergens, because raw materials that contain or are made from the allergen are intentional ingredients in those products.
The only way to make sure your lip balm is safe for you, if you have an allergy, is either to get it from a small natural products business like MadeOn, or make it yourself.ย (FYI, Renee from MadeOn tells me her products are all wheat-free and gluten free.)
Lip balm is one of those things that is easy to make at home if you have the time.ย You don’t need 24 ingredients.ย You can choose from your favorite therapeutic oils and add just the right amount of beeswax to get it to set up in a tube or smooth on from a tin.ย Add a little color for tinted lip balm or leave it out.ย The choice is yours.
The perfect ratio of beeswax to other ingredients is 1 part beeswax to 2 parts other therapeutic oils.ย Beeswax offers it’s own therapeutic benefit. It protects and preserves the skin, and draws moisture to itself to keep skin moist and elastic.ย The other oils used in your DIY lip balms should be nondrying oils that nourish the skin and calm any burning sensations from parched or chapped lips.
Lip balm is a lotion bar with flavor and optional tint.ย Since it goes on your lips and will be licked off it should be 100% food safe.ย No lead.ย No GMOs.ย No unpronounceable ingredients.ย No gluten.
This recipe is the best tinted lip balm recipe, with a hint of feminine color that’s suitable for work or play.ย Use it to soothe dry, chapped lips or to prevent that telltale red halo that lets the world know you need to drink more water.
I like tinted lip balm.ย It evens out the color of your lips and draws attention to your eyes, the window to your beautiful soul.ย Raspberry, plum, chocolate, or copper looks vibrant in the tube but against your skin the tinted lip balm offers soft highlights, that draw attention to your natural beauty, not just your lips.
Here’s what you’ll need to make 3-4 tubes of tinted lip balm at home:
Tinted Lip Balm Recipe
The castor oil in this recipe penetrates deep into the skin to moisturize and soothe chapped, wind-burned lips. It also makes the lip balm a little shinier.ย If you don’t have it, you can replace it with an equal amount of additional calendula infused olive oil.
Yield: 3 – 4 tubes
- 1 teaspoon beeswax (about 4 grams)
- 1 teaspoon cocoa butter
- ยฝ teaspoon castor oil
- 1 teaspoon calendula infused olive oil
- 5 drops spearmint essential oil (or try Vanilla Oleoresin from Plant Therapyย for a sweet vanilla flavor or peppermint essential oil)
Color base:
- ยผ teaspoon mica pigment (lip safe) (Try: rose pearl, raspberry, or merlot sparkle from Bramble Berry)
Directions:
Make a double boiler using a glass measuring cup placed in the water inside a saucepan, slow cooker insert or instant pot insert.
Add beeswax, cocoa butter, castor oil, and calendula infused olive oil to the measuring cup.ย Heat the saucepan on medium until the beeswax is melted.ย Remove from heat.
Stir in the mica pigment till well blended.ย ย Add essential oil.ย Stir well to combine. Pour into lip balm tubes or lipstick containers.ย Keep upright until it cools and firms up.
Label and date.
To use:
Apply liberally to dry lips.
