What is this website about?
Joybilee Farm is about being remarkable, following your homestead dreams of living a more sustainable, self-reliant life, doing what you love, where you want to live.ย The people and sheep at Joybilee Farm have been living the joy-filled, homestead lifestyle for 30 years and every blog post and newsletter reflects a passion for self-sufficiency that is steeped in experience.
Everything you ever heard about sheep is wrong
First, let me tell you a bit about sheep, from a shepherd’s perspective.ย I’ve lived with sheep for over a decade, and you need to know that everything you’ve ever heard about sheep is wrong.ย Sheep don’t blindly follow just any leader.ย Sheep are smart.ย Studies have shown that sheep remember people for years, after they’ve met them once.ย Sheep even do better on problem solving tests than monkeys.ย Sheep know instinctively what is nourishing to eat.ย Sheep fiercely protect their young.ย Sheep will not run headlong into danger.ย The stereo-types you’ve heard about sheep are made by people who have been outsmarted by sheep.
The value of sheep
Sheep have value.ย They are kind to the environment — soft footed and gentle on the ground, they graze on marginal lands, spreading fertility and bring poor farm land back into productivity.ย Sheep are productive.ย They provide 100% renewable, sustainable, natural fiber that is antibacterial, warm, resists dirt, and is biodegradable.ย Their fiber has provided mankind with clothing, shoes, hats, housing and furnishings since the first sheep met the first man.ย They provide food — both milk and meat.ย They are the perfect homestead animal.
The value of nonconformity
And throughout history coloured sheep have been of more value than white sheep, to artisans.ย Only industrial, corporate agriculture values conformity and uniformity.ย Coloured sheep are nonconformists.ย Every coloured sheep is different.ย They are born black and change colour as they age.ย Every shearing from a coloured sheep will give you a different shade of colour from black, to dark chocolate to milk chocolate, mocha and silver grey.
Why purple?ย
If you saw a purple sheep in a flock of coloured and white sheep you’d be amazed.ย You’d wanna tell somebody.ย And every purple sheep is “remarkable,” an individual, nonconformist that is making a difference.
This is an invitation to join my flock.ย
