Hi,
I recently adopted 2 English Angora sisters. I live in the south shore of Nova Scotia and am wondering where you source your whole grains? I looked at the diet you give your bunnies and would like to do the same. Thank you for your continued online support. You’re website is lovely!

Hello, I am new to your site and found a reference in the section about substituting oils in soap making, about coconut butter and coconut oil. I have been searching on information on how to use coconut butter (coconut meal, coconut manna) in soap making and have not been able to find anything except a post on a blog where someone did use it by accident, but did not follow-up with a post on what happened. I have contacted various sources and no one has any information about saponification or has ever used it in soap making, etc.
I’m curious if you could provide more detail on using coconut butter in soap making. ??? I would love to have some information and possibly be able to do this, especially without just experimenting and keeping my fingers crossed that all would work!
Thank you!

Cocoa butter is used in soap making and makes a harder bar of soap. You want to limit the amount of cocoa butter so that your bar doesn’t crack while it’s cooling. However, coconut butter has some naturally occurring sugars in it and this could give you some trouble in soap making. Like milk, the naturally occurring sugars in coconut butter can caramelize during saponification and also may cause the soap to overheat as it’s cooling. The sugars will also react with the other ingredients in the soap so it would be difficult to make a blanket statement. If you want to try it, by all means do, but start with a small amount, less than 10% of the total soap, and start with a smaller batch so that you can gauge your success. You may also need to take steps to keep the soap cooler during the saponification process for the first 24 hours to prevent separation.

Hi Chris, I have your book, The Beeswax workshop and love it. We have been looking at getting into bees. We live on 5 acres and in the middle of 20, plus hay fields near by. No one sprays in our area. So, we think we have a good food source for a hive. We are in middle Michigan. What suggestions can you give us to begin bee keeping. Type of hive, books, bees that are best for area…. we are going to join a local bee keeping club. Thank you.
