Have you noticed that when you go into a department store in the mall, you have to walk right through the perfume department?ย Walking the gauntlet between the cosmetic counter and the perfume counter leaves me with a headache and sometimes dizziness.ย And I’m not alone.ย Many public buildings, churches, schools, and hospitals now have a sign on the door declaring the building a scent-free zone.
Perfume and cologne are two of the more toxic personal care products on the market. Many synthetic fragrances have been linked to dermatitis, asthma, insulin resistance, and even cancer. Perfumes and fragrances represent more than 3000 undisclosed chemical compounds and manufacturers are not required to disclose a list of the actual chemicals on the label.
Today, more than ever, people are becoming allergic to these synthetic blends. Even to the point of life-threatening reactions. In a recent article from WebMD “Experts theorize that one reason fragranceย allergies appear to be increasing is that fragrances themselves have become such a prominent part of our world. According to the AAD, some 5,000 different fragrances — and countless other fragrance combinations — are used in products today. And they can be a powerful, toxic brew.” [source]
But for many, it isn’t the scent that causes the problem, but rather chemical and artificial fragrances.ย Essential oils are often well tolerated by those with scent sensitivities.ย Those with sensitivities to fragrance can create their own unique solid perfume blends based on scents that they enjoy and that they tolerate well.
The Rules of Perfume Making
Beeswax helps keep volatile scents in suspension so they won’t dissipate into the air as quickly. Perfumes are made up of a combination of lighter top notes, middle notes, and bass notes.
The lighter top notes are generally the first thing you smell in a fragrance blend. Top notes also dissipate quickly. The middle note in a scent blend is the lingering note, and the bass note is the drone that can last for hours. Think of florals as providing the top notes. The middle notes are a combination of floral, grassy, and woodsy scents, with the bass notes coming from the wood and resin family of fragrances or strong florals like jasmine.
Make Your Own Perfume For Gifts
Consider packaging solid perfume in specialty lockets, small containers, and as solid perfume sticks. A tiny, but beautiful package has a greater perceived value when given as a gift and it showcases their uniqueness.
You can substitute placing this perfume in tins and instead package them as you would a lotion bar. They will store and travel well and can also safely protect your skin with natural oils and beeswax, sealing in the moisture.ย
Another option for packaging is to use lip balm tubes to disperse your solid perfume. Keeping it in these small packages makes it easy to carry one in your purse, backpack, car and leave one in your desk.
Woodsy Solid Perfume Recipe
Description
With citrus top notes and deep wood and resin fragrance, this Woodsy Solid Perfume Blend has the exotic scent of sandalwood with lingering hints of smoke.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
- 25 drops sandalwood essential oil
- 25 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 30 drops bergamot essential oil
- 2 drops vetiver essential oil
- 10 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
Instructions
- Create a double boiler using a glass measuring cup
- Simmer the water under the beeswax and jojoba oil over medium heat until the wax and oil are melted together. Remove from the heat.
- Allow this mixture to cool to room temperature, stirring while it cools. When it is the consistency of soft butter, add the essential oils a few drops at a time until the fragrance is pleasing.
- Pour into a 1/2 ounce tin. Label and date.
Notes
To use – apply to pulse points and enjoy.

Where can l purchase the small glass containers with the black tops for the solid perfume?

Could you please give me some clarification?
I’ve bought your book ‘The Beeswax Workshop’ and am now experimenting a few projects. On p.84 just under the heading, it says ‘basic solid perfume … using 2 tablespoons of beeswax and 6 tablespoons of jojoba oil …’.
However, the actual recipe say 2 ‘teaspoons’ of beeswax, as it does the recipe online here.
Which is correct for beeswax, tablespoon or teaspoon?
Also, if there is any errata (list) from the book, the line is much appreciated.
The recipe in the book is a different recipe than the one here on the blog. There is no errata provided by the publisher for this book.
