With Father’s Day just around the corner make up this quick and easy DIY beard care kit for the Dads in your inner circle.ย These easy projects can be made in a short hour and be ready for gift giving tonight.ย Plus DIY beard care products like beard oil, beard balm, hair tonic, and after-shave oil moisturize and nourish Dad’s beard and skin with wholesome ingredients, encouraging luxurious growth.ย What better gift to give the men in your life! Or you can try some of these ideas too.
I ordered the ingredients for these 4 projects from iHerb.ย It was a painless process using their online ordering system. IHerb carries over 30,000 natural products and ships to over 150 countries. I found a wide selection of DIY ingredients on their website.ย Many of the brands that are available on the iHerb site are brands that I’ve used before, so I was confident in making my order that the products would be high quality.
IHerb orders are shipped from climate-controlled distribution centers to ensure the quality of their products.ย This is important when you are ordering DIY ingredients since many of the liquid oils are highly perishable.ย I didn’t need to use their customer service but I was happy to learn that iHerb offers customer service 24 hours a day / 7 days a week in 10 different languages.
While I had my order delivered to the UPS store across the border, iHerb has been successfully shipping to Canada for 15 years.ย Canadian shipments are sent from their US warehouses via air freight.ย Orders under $200 CND are shipped duty-free to Canadian addresses.ย You can learn more about iHerb’s Canadian shipping options here.
After I place my order, the ingredients were delivered 2 days earlier than they were promised. Everything came well wrapped in the box with strong padding so there was no chance of breakage.ย I was very happy with the whole process.
What’s in the Box?
I ordered the exact ingredients I used for these 4 DIY Father’s Day Gifts.ย I chose the Sky Organics brand based on my previous experience using their beeswax in some of my other DIY projects.ย The Sky Organics Organic Yellow beeswax smells sweet and natural without any chemical or plastic off-scents.ย That was enough of a “recommendation” to me to choose more products from this brand.ย I chose to work with Sky Organics beeswax pellets, organic argan oil from Morocco, and organic aloe vera gel from the USA.ย ย Both argan oil and aloe vera gel are good hair care and skincare ingredients.ย They promote luxurious hair growth and support the repair of damaged skin.
Other products in this order included 3 from the Art Naturals brand — Rosehip seed carrier oil from Chile, and two essential oils: Bergamot and Frankincense Serrata.ย Rosehip seed oil is high in antioxidants and carotenoids which help reduce the appearance of fine lines and nourish the skin and hair.ย Bergamot and frankincense are anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, with strong benefits in skincare provided, they are diluted properly in a carrier oil.ย Bergamot can be phototoxic if used in high concentrations.ย The amount of bergamot essential oils in the following recipes should not be exceeded.
I did have a difficult time removing the child guard cap on the Artnaturals Frankincense essential oil.ย If you have arthritis in your hands you will want to choose a different brand of frankincense essential oil, to avoid the difficulty of removing child guard caps.ย This was the only product on my shopping list with a child guard cap.
I also picked out two other essential oils from Aura Cacia: Texas Cedarwood, a smokey cedarwood essential oil and Rosemary essential oil which is highly antioxidant and amazing for all hair applications.
I chose La Tourangelle grape seed carrier oil in these recipes, because of my previous experience with the brand’s quality cooking oils.ย This grapeseed oil can be used for both cooking and body care products, making it ideal for a base for DIY projects like the 4 beard care gifts in this post.ย This brand of grapeseed oil is a more economical way to source carrier oil than purchasing oils specifically for body products.ย The oil is fresh smelling with no rancidity.ย Grapeseed oil makes an ideal carrier oil for all hair and skin applications because it is quickly absorbed into the skin, without leaving any greasy residue.ย It is a light oil that won’t weigh down the hair or make it feel greasy.
Finally, I chose Seabuck Wonders brand of seabuckthorn berry oil.ย Seabuckthorn berry oil is a prime anti-aging oil that is rich in carotenoids to support the collagen in skin and hair.ย A little of this quality oil goes a long way in creating a luxury skin and beard care product for Dad.ย Too much can discolour skin and turn grey hair orange because of the high concentration of carotenoids, so use a light hand.
Beard Care and Hair Care for Dads of All Ages
My middle son, a father of two daughters, and my son-in-law both sport beards.ย One is thick and luxurious.ย The other beard is less so.ย Both need regular maintenance with hydrating, nourishing oils to look their best.ย I created this DIY conditioning beard oil to honour them and help them look and feel attractive.
Beard oil has 2 functions.ย It lubricates and moisturizes both the skin and the facial hair, conditioning it.ย It also cleans and removes bacteria that can become trapped in the beard.ย If the right oils are used, it can also encourage luxurious growth.
Beard oil has two parts: Carrier oils which moisturize and condition and essential oils that offer antimicrobial benefits and add further therapeutic and aromatherapy benefits.ย Carrier oils are made from nuts and seeds which contain nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.ย These nourish the hair follicles and skin, promote thick growth, while they soften and tame the hair.
Essential oils also condition the hair and promote a more luxurious beard by fighting inflammation and bacteria to allow for unhindered hair growth.ย Their natural fragrance can elevate mood and calm the mind.
In these DIY projects, I used frankincense and Texas cedar essential oils for their woodsy, smoky fragrance. These are the bass notes in this blend.ย I chose the citrus notes of bergamot and the middles notes of rosemary for their woodsy, herbal scents.ย These essential oils blend well with sandalwood, cypress, and fir if you are looking for a deeper-in-the-woods fragrance.ย Myrrh essential oil is also a very beneficial essential oil for skin and hair care.
You’ll also need 3 x 2-ounce dropper bottles and a 2-ounce salve tin or 2-ounce glass jar to complete this DIY Beard Care Kit.ย You can upcycle these from other projects or get new ones. I had my containers on hand for these projects.

Beard oil can be applied on both wet and dry beards.ย It should be part of everyday grooming.ย For scanty beards or where the face is chaffed and flaky, apply beard oil at night before bed, and again in the morning during your grooming rituals.
If you make this beard oil recipe for a gift, include the recipe card.ย Your gift recipient will be amazing at how quick and easy it is to make beard oil at home.ย Premium beard oil typically costs $20 per ounce.ย But you can make this beard balm recipe with premium organic oils for around $5 an ounce.
This beard oil recipe can be made into a beard balm recipe with the addition of beeswax.ย Making beard balm takes just a little longer than making beard oil.ย You’ll need to melt the beeswax with the carrier oils and then add any essential oils that you plan to use.ย Beard balm is used to condition beard hair and skin and as a styling aid.ย It’s a little thicker than beard oil and adds fullness and body to thin, sparse beards.ย This combination of carrier oils can also increase beard hair growth, improving the overall texture of the beard.
Moisturizing and Conditioning Beard Balm for Dad

My husband hates frankincense and myrrh, are there other oil options that can be substituted? Like orange and bay rum? Or other citrus?
Joybilee Farm says
Absolutely, though you’ll want to stick with tangerine or sweet orange as some citrus peels can cause sun sensitivity that can burn the skin and cause damage with sun exposure. I love bay rum but it can be hard to find.

Could you please let us know the total cost of your selection of items purchased for the beard kit?
Thanks
Melinda says
Thanks for the response. Just wanted to report that I used the “hair gel” & it feels really nice on my fine hair…I think my boys will like it too along with their beard oil & after-shave oil ๐
Also, I did put the “hair gel” into a squeeze travel bottle & it works fine.
Joybilee Farm says
Excellent.
Melinda says
I just made the hair tonic & when I stirred the ingredients together it got opaque white (like the oil emulsified) and thick. It doesn’t seem to lend itself to a dropper bottle as is pictured above (my aloe was very thick which could be why). Is this to be expected or did yours come out more of a liquid?
Joybilee Farm says
Mine doesn’t get thick but if your’s does switch it out to a silicone squeeze bottle, like the kind they sell for air travel. My aloe was quite liquid-y. And it remained clear after I put the recipe together. Also if you are keeping your oils in the fridge, the cold can change the texture of the ingredients, and make them more gel-like. But they will return to liquid at room temperature.
