Set Aside a Day to Rest on the Homestead
Iโd like to challenge you to โfollow the ancient pathwaysโ and revive the ritual of setting apart the seventh day as a day of rest in your home.
The Day of Rest
The work doesnโt end.ย The to-do list doesnโt get shorter.ย If you are waiting until things slow down before you take a day of rest โ things will never slow down.ย Voids get filled in direct correlation to your need for empty time.ย Rest must be intentional.
You are designed by the Creator of the Universe to need rest.ย Those in your household also need rest.ย During rest, you are more than when you are working.ย You are no longer an automaton programmed to fulfill your duty to society.ย During rest, you become fully alive and fully human.ย During rest, you reconnect with your primal needs for fellowship with God and others.ย During 6 days you impact the world.ย One day of the week you become who you were meant to be.ย And from that, you can be more in the next 6 days that you give of yourself to the world.
Iโd like to challenge you to โfollow the ancient pathwaysโ and revive the ritual of setting apart the seventh day as a day of rest in your home.
I speak from experience.ย For the first 50 years of my life, I waited for rest to happen.ย Sundays, my then chosen day of rest, was filled with homestead crisis, volunteer work at church, and then frantic meal preparation and clean-up that sucked up the afternoon until we dreaded Sundays.ย It seemed like the more we needed to rest the busier and more demanding Sundays became.ย Itโs not as if we were pastors at a church or anything.ย In fact, Sundays should have been easier to rest on because we were self-employed homesteaders.ย We chose our own work hours.ย But it was a war to fight for rest.
For a couple of years, Robin worked as a janitor at our church to supplement our homestead income.ย Since he was on the payroll, it meant the whole family was โemployedโ by the church.ย On a few Sundays, we walked into church and were asked, before we even walked into the hall, to fix an overflowing toilet.ย I kid you not.ย Dressed in our best clothes, bent over a toilet with a plunger, spilling filthy water all over our dress clothes, then mopping the soiled floor, we dutifully did the job that could have waited till Monday.ย Thatโs what โout of orderโ signs are for.ย I almost quit church that day.ย We stopped wearing good clothes to church after that and Sunday became a workday, like every other day.ย We died a little inside.ย Slavery does that to people.
When God reminded the children of Israel that they needed to keep the Sabbath Day, one of the reasons He gave them was that they had been slaves in Egypt and He had brought them out of slavery with his own outstretched arm.ย The day of rest was a sign to them that they were no longer slaves โ they had been redeemed from slavery by God himself.ย This was their reason to celebrate one day a week as set apart from the others by stopping their busyness.
In spring we attended a Messianic synagogue on a Saturday in Spokane.ย This was for a course assignment that Sarah had for her distance learning course in ethnic cultures. It was definitely more than a Sabbath Daysโ journey from our home in BC.ย But at that service, conducted mostly in Hebrew with English subtitles, the light went on.ย When we got home we started keeping the 7th Day Sabbath.ย On Sabbath, we donโt attend church or religious services.ย On Sabbath, there is no one to ask us to clean the toilets.ย No stress over meal preparation โ everything is made ahead and heated in a crockpot.ย Itโs been one of the most revolutionary things weโve experienced.
We didnโt become 7th Day Adventists.ย We didnโt convert to Judaism.ย We continue to attend church on Sunday and fellowship with other Christians on Sunday.ย We simply started obeying the 4th commandment to remember the 7th day and keep it set apart.ย And since making that commitment weโve gained so much more than weโve given up.
Hindrances to keeping a day of rest
There were hindrances to me in keeping a day of rest.ย First, how do you manage to have food prepared in advance?ย I tried making a roast so that there would be leftovers, but my family would eat second helpings and there wouldnโt be enough leftovers for another meal.ย Iโd get caught up in running an errand that had to be done on Saturday because that was the only day available.ย This still happens, especially with only one car in our household.ย On those days we remember the words of Messiah, โThe Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.โย Keeping a day of rest is a learning experience, especially for those of us without a mom to teach us how itโs done.
Let me share some of the tips Iโve found that have helped us keep a day set apart for rest.ย While we are still learning how to make it work, perhaps the bit weโve learned so far will help you in your journey, too.ย Maybe you have more tips you can add in the comments.
4 tips for Keeping a Day of Rest
Plan ahead
Really if you donโt plan on Thursday and Friday to rest on a Saturday, it ainโt gonna happen.ย Life has a way of filling the void.ย Start by saying, โNoโ to outside activities โ menโs breakfasts, craft fairs, farmerโs markets, momโs morning out, grocery shopping.
Clean up the houseย and declutter ahead of time, so you arenโt tempted to straighten things up.ย Itโs amazing how the cobwebs magically appear out of nowhere when you are sitting on the couch in a beam of sunlight reading a book.ย Resist the urge to jump up and deal with them.ย You need this rest time just as much as your family.
Plan a special meal to start the set-apart time
The seventh-day Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday night and goes until sunset Saturday night.ย Have a special meal to start, with candles, and special food like bread and grape juice, to signal the beginning of your set apart time.ย This is a sensory signal to your body to relax.ย I really look forward to this time.ย You can physically feel the peace descend around your mealtime as you consciously set this time apart.
Do your special meal preparation and baking on Thursday or Friday
Make the meals and the bread for your rest on the day before so that you wonโt have to cook.ย I put the ingredients for our Saturday lunch in the crockpot liner and put it in the fridge so that on Saturday morning I only need to take it out, set it in the crockpot shell, and plug it in.ย On Friday morning, I bake 2 loaves of bread, which is plenty for my family to last 3 days, through to Monday.ย Some families may need more bread to get through.
Avoid running out on errands.ย One errand becomes many errands and before you know it the day is gone.ย There are times when I must run an errand on Saturday.ย When that happens we do the errand and remind ourselves that โthe Sabbath is made for man.โ
Avoid saying โyesโ to activitiesย that will take you away from home on your day of rest โ even religious activities.ย Give yourself permission to rest by saying, โNo.โ
Incorporate meaningful ritual into the day โ reading the Bible together as a family, lighting candles during the meal, for instance.ย We eat the bread and grape juice at the beginning of our Friday night meal as a family communion observance, to remember the death of the Messiah until He comes.ย Your ritual may look different โ find something that speaks of rest and fellowship to you.ย The ritual signals to your mind to relax and be at peace.
Consider keeping your day of rest from sunset to sunset
A day of rest that begins in the morning, commits you to ignore things that you think really should be done.ย It sets up conflict in your mind.ย But rest from sunset to sunset means that any tasks that canโt wait can be done before dark on Friday or after dark the next day.ย ย ย And you are able to put them out of your mind without worry. This works really well for homesteaders and makes keeping a day of rest doable.ย Any animal husbandry tasks that are essential can be done after sunset on Saturday or before sunset on Friday.ย You never go a full day without attending to crucial needs.ย (We do feed and water our animals on Sabbath, but we try to leave things like hoof trimming or shots to other days.)
Know that when you decide to obey the commandment there will be war
The world seems to conspire to keep you from your appointment with rest.ย Your friends wonโt understand your commitment to keeping a day of rest.ย Your church will think youโve become lazy, flipped out into legalism, or fallen away into a cult.ย Donโt let it worry you what other people think.ย The Sabbath rest is a gift from our Creator.ย Some choose not to open the gift.ย Those who do open it find an amazing treasure that opens up other mysteries in the Word of God to their eyes, as well.

Hello Chris, Thank you for such a beautiful reminder. I have not been keeping the Sabbath holy. In fact, I go to church, but unfortunately treat the rest of the day as a regular day. Your article has really made me stop and think.
Please tell me more…you choose the Sabbath as Friday night to Saturday night. Then go to church Sunday? Minimal cooking, no cleaning, etc.? What about visiting with friends or family? I need more info. I like the idea of celebrating the Jewish holidays and calling the Father and Son by Hebrew names? Which do you use? Yahweh and Yeshua? Do you know a website or book that talks more of these practices?
Thank you so much for sharing these ideas.

Hi, Elaine, we found the attending church on Sunday and all that pertains when you are active in the church did not make it a day of rest at all. And we do farm. What we found was that we could wait to deal with a problem if we were keeping the sabbath day from sunset to sunset. Because we would have the daytime on Friday and the night time on Saturday. Even though it’s a 24 hour period it is different than going midnight to midnight. (I’m probably not explaining that very well.)
Minimal cooking because we plan ahead and have lunch and dinner prepared for Saturday, the day before. We do the dishes after sunset on Saturday night. But we do dishes on Friday night before bed. That’s the extent of our cleaning. We do use “Yeshua” at home for “Jesus” but when we are with our friends we mostly say “Jesus” because that is more comfortable for them.
I’ve been blessed listening to Paul Wilbur’s teaching about worship. https://www.wilburministries.com/ He has a worship and teaching service that is livestreamed on the First Friday of every month. The videos are on YouTube and you can access through his website.

We all do. Those who think they don’t, just don’t know what they don’t know. My goodness, when I started reading the OT for understanding it, not just reading through the Bible in one year, but really to understand, I was shocked at how much I thought I knew that I actually had all wrong. But God knows our hearts.

How cool to have stumbled across another homesteading sabbath keeper.. =) We (our family) also keeps the 7th day sabbath… although we do go a bit further and keep the Old Testament feast days.. and try to use Hebrew names for the Creator and His Son. We’re not Jewish.. and we also keep and follow the Words of the New Testament too. From past experience, we don’t go to church… when my family started keeping sabbath (when I was 12) we were accused of joining an occult… eventhough we were so involved in the church and my parents were a part of the worship team. We hadn’t been doing anything different.. just had a few questions.
Anyway… it was such a change for us…. and now I’m 26 with 3 children of my own… and I still continue to keep the 7th day sabbath. It seems on my prep day (friday) that something always comes up and my children always seem to make the worst messes on prep day. They are 5, 4 and 2. I’ve actually taken to deep cleaning my house on Thursdays, so that I’m free to do any baking or light pick-up cleaning on Friday. Though I’m almost considering going a step further and adding baking things that would take a long time (like bread) to Thursdays also.
Now I cannot imagine a week without a day of rest…
Thank you for such a great post!

We also keep the feast days and speak among ourselves using the Hebrew names, but my readers are not there yet. So nice to meet you.

I also have experienced a lot of what you have above and can relate fully of what I USED to do on Sundays, but have chosen lovingly to follow only my Creator and Lord Jesus in keeping His 7th day Sabbath to remember to keep it holy as it is the 4th commandment in the Holy Bible and He is still Lord of the Sabbath as always throughout all time and will be in eternity. I have been keeping it for almost 34 years now and so very much more blest for it. I would not trade it for anything. I love Jesus all the more for it and abide in Him closer than before when I kept Sunday. We had one car for a while also but we still kept the Sabbath holy no matter what and when I told my Sunday friends and family about it they rejected it and told me I was crazy and wanted not much to do with me anymore. Pitiful, sinfully pitiful unto me. I do all by food preps on Thurs and Fridays’ long before sunset and wash my clothes on Sunday’s as I have Sabbath table place settings that need washed up that I keep just for it such as napkins, tablecloth. I go green as much as possible here at our house all the time and do not use much paper napkins, paper towels, etc. Sabbath has truly been a delight unto us for all these wonderful 34 years since we found it together. PTL!
