Hi, Nancy, I’m so glad to hear that you are taking action and seeing results.
The amount of seed is for an entire year, if you were continuing to grow indoors year round. If you plan to only grow sprouts and microgreens when your garden isn’t producing you’d have to take into account your own growing season — everyone is different. For instance my garden produces at least something I can harvest from May 15th to October 15th, when we can get our first snow fall. So I’ve got 7 months where I’d need to grow my sprouts and microgreens if I want fresh salad greens. But if you live where the growing season is longer you just need to count the months YOU need to grow sprouts and microgreens, take my calculation for amount of seed you need (2 kilograms of small seed; 4 kilograms of large seed = 6 kilograms of seed for microgreens; 2 kilograms of small seed; 2 kilograms of large seed = 4 kilograms of seed for sprouts; total seed 10 kilograms / year) divide this by 12 months — (350 grams small seed (broccoli; radish; purple kohlrabi; fenugreek etc.) plus 500 grams of large seed (sunflower, peas, lentils, beans) total 800 grams of seed a month or about 1 3/4 pounds of seed. My estimates allow for extra jars and microgreen trays each month, so its a generous estimate. Do find your favorite seeds before ordering in bulk so that you are not left with lots of seed for a microgreen you don’t enjoy the flavor of. Purchase in larger quantities only after you’ve picked your favorites.
